The Colt 1873 Single Action Army Birdhead 4″ Revolver, New Model
The bird’s head style grip first appeared on Colt derringers and the little Old Line and House Pistols of the early 1870s. In 1875 the bird’s head grip was incorporated into a new full-sized Colt revolver and the new shooting iron immediately became popular with lawmen and gun slingers alike. One of the Old West’s most famous pistoleros, “Billy The Kid,” liked the design and started packing a bird’s head Colt. Uberti has recreated the look and feel of the classic bird’s head Colt with the 1873 Cattleman Bird’s Head available in 3-1/2″, 4″, 4-1/2″, and 5″ barrel lengths.
The bird’s head grip design was not new when Colt introduced the full-sized Lightning and Thunderer six-guns in 1877. The grip design had been used on Colt Derringers since the 1850s. Regardless, the Old West cowboys came to call these 1877 models Bird’s Head Colts.
The Cattleman Bird’s Head sports a distinctive grip that resembles the shape of a bird’s head. The design had originally been used on Colt Derringers in the 1850s. All Uberti 1873s are easily field stripped for cleaning a
